The Perfect Red Lip

Applying red lipstick is something friends of mine often ask me to help them with when we are getting ready together. Not only is it a challenge to apply it without making a mess, but it also has a tendency to smudge and fade throughout the night. Red lipstick will usually have to be reapplied if eating is involved in your evening, but this guide I've created will maximize the longevity of your red lip over the course of a night.

1. Apply a light coat of lip primer or lip balm.
2. Line the outside of your lips. When using red lipliner it is important not to over draw. Stay inside the natural line of your lips, otherwise your mouth could end up looking clown-like.
3. Fill in the rest of your lips with the lip liner.
4. Apply a coat of red lipstick. When using bright colors such as red I prefer to use a lip brush to apply the lipstick to help with precision.
5. Blot lips with a piece of tissue to remove excess product.
6. Using loose or pressed powder apply a layer of powder OVER the tissue. The powder will absorb excess moisture and help keep the lipstick in place.

For even longer lasting color repeat steps 4-6 one more time.

Products used
MAC Prep and Prime
Makeup Forever Aqua Lip  in 08C Red
MAC Matte Lipstick in Russian Red
MAC Blot Powder in Light
This Chanel Rouge Allure color was one of the first red lip products I ever purchased. I like that it has a bit of a glossy shine to it while also delivering a rich red color. I also love the OCC Lip Tar and have it in several shades of red. The only downside to this product is that it can be a bit messy since it is so pigmented, but since you only need a small amount they last a very long time. Both products are great for makeup artists as they are easy to pour out onto a makeup palette.
