Love Is In the Air

When asked about Valentine's Day, many people I know would call it cheesy and commercialized. Some would even go so far as to say that people in a relationship don't need a holiday to celebrate their love. I can't say that I completely disagree with those comments, but I'm such a romantic that my heart won't let me ignore this holiday.

Last year was not only my first Valentine's Day with my boyfriend, but my first Valentine's Day ever being in a relationship. After experiencing the holiday on both ends of the spectrum, I came to realize that even if you're single, you can still have just as good of a celebration. When I was single, I used to buy myself treats and watch whatever romantic comedy had just come out in theatres. Now that I'm in a relationship, what may my plans be, do you ask?

For Christmas, I gave my boyfriend a box full of 'Open When' letters. There were letters such as 'Open when you've had a rough day' and 'Open when you miss me'. I decided to include one that said 'Open a week before Valentine's Day', with a list of ways we could celebrate. As per on of my requests in the letter, my boyfriend and I have purchased tickets to go see the new Fifty Shades of Grey movie (insert probable eye roll here). It's one of those movies that's so bad it's entertaining. We're going to see it at the VIP theatre at Yonge and Eglington, and for those of you who haven't been there, let me be the one to tell you that this theatre is heaven. They have electric recliners and a menu full of delicious food, therefore, our plan B is to get into a food coma and take a nice cozy nap together.

So as a single gal I was watching corny movies on Valentine's Day, and as a girl in love I find myself holding onto old traditions. It really is true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

If you're single this year, why not take yourself to see a movie? As nice as it is to go with my boyfriend, I also love going to the movies on my own - and I still do sometimes. Who says you can't buy yourself chocolates and a bottle of wine? Definitely not me!

I can't even count the amount of times I've bought myself to candy or flowers, Valentine's Day or not. There are so many places around Toronto you can treat yourself to. Here are some of my favourites and where to get them:

Sugarfina - Nordstrom - Buy Online
Godiva Chocolatier - Eaton Centre, Yorkdale and Royal Bank Plaza - Buy Online

Lux Flower Box - Buy Online
Daits - Pusateri's at Saks Queen Street - View Menu Online

If you look to your right, you'll see that I have one of my favourite Carrie Bradshaw quotes underneath my photo. It reads:

"The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous."

So remember, it doesn't matter if you're dating or single, celebrating or not. Do something that makes you happy, something that feeds your soul. Something that you love. In the end, that's what Valentine's Day is all about, right? Love.

With love,
